John Thaxton failed in his bid to become the European Boxing Union lightweight champion after his corner had to pull out Thaxton due to a deep cut above the right eye of Thaxton.
The fight was stopped seven seconds into round six.
Having lost the early rounds while he struggled to find his jab and a lack of reach, Thaxton began coming into the towards the end of round four when he caught Romanov with some solid right hooks which had the crowd on their feet as they sensed a knockout however Thaxton failed to follow up with the shots and Romanov was allowed to recover and regain his rhythm.
Jon Thaxton had the following to say:
"I was just getting into it, and it usually takes a few rounds. He was coming forward - but how long would he have kept coming?"
"I fought the best lightweight in Europe - he's not ranked number two in the world by the WBA for nothing, after watching that, I definitely expect Khan to avoid Romanov."
"I've got every trust and belief in my team - they're in charge, and if it's the right decision then it is the right one," he said.
"I never think I'm going to lose until the final decision"
Dominic Ingle also commented that the cut sustained by Thaxton was one of the worse cuts that he had seen and that he had no problem what so ever in stopping the fight.
