Lora was determined throughout, walking his man down but not quite able to score meaningful shots with his wide angled punches. Mitchell was able to use his good defensive skills to keep out of the way of Lora's known big right hand, and landed a counter left hook to the head of his opponent from the Dominican Republic to floor him in the second and put him on the seat of his pants. It did not look like Lora was going to beat referee, Richie Davis's count but he rose quickly enough to continue. Not quite pleasing the crowd who wanted a blood thirsty knockout, Mitchell took his time to earn the rounds under his belt, a sensible thing to do since his spectacular knockout victory over John Murray in his last bout seven months ago.
In round five, Mitchell put the viewing audience on tenter hooks as he was caught with a right hook and had to get on his bike, but not before attempting to exchange on the inside which had no effect. The intensity of this round lead both fighters to stare one another down once the bell had rang and Davis had to send both boxers to their corners.
From this point on Mitchell focused on the jab and landed it almost at will, and Lora's nose started to bleed in the seventh and received an uppercut to add to his punishment. Mitchell turned it on in the ninth and scored a left hook to the head and a left uppercut followed by another left, and never let his foot off the gas as he focused on that left hook which was evidently his lottery punch. A right hand and a left uppercut from Mitchell made Lora's legs buckle, and while the Londoner attempted to go for the stoppage by landing another left, he was caught with a right hook by Lora before the final bell.
"I was saving myself for the Burns fight. I could have finished him but I needed the ten rounds," Mitchell said.
When asked if he would like to fight on the Groves vs Anderson bill on the 16th March Mitchell said, "It would be perfect."
Steve Bunce would not let Mitchell go before asking him if he had a message to give to Ricky Burns for a future mega domestic bout.
"Rick, you are a brilliant fighter. Let's get it on champ," said Mitchell.
