John MurrayKhan't Touch This

John Murray produced a breathtaking display to stop Lee Meagre in the fifth round and win the vacant British Light-weight title. The fight billed as a local derby was touted as a fight of the year contender, and neither fighter disappointed.

Right from the first bell, both fighters traded punches, Meagre deciding that going toe-to-toe with Murray was a smart strategy. It wasn’t, and it backfired spectacularly. For all the heart and bravery that he possessed it wasn’t the sensible thing to do. Instead of fighting Murray he should have boxed him. More..

Wladimir KlitschkoKlitschko Wins in Lacklustre Bout

Klitschko’s win over Sultan Ibragimov in early 2008 was a dominant performance by the consensus top heavyweight in the world.  However when pitted against a completely overmatched opponent in Ibragimov, Klitschko was content to simply outpoint and outlast the inferior Ibragimov rather than strive for the knockout.  Whether Klitschko was afraid he might relive another embarrassing knockout at the hands of a southpaw or perhaps he just wanted to play it safe, we’ll never know.  But when Klitschko faced top contender Tony Thompson on Saturday, both he and the boxing public knew he had to put in a spectacular performance to redeem his last bout.More..

Ricardo TorresNo Second Chance For Torres

In the wildest fight of the year, Kendall Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) scored a spectacular first round knockout over reigning world super lightweight champion Ricardo Torres (32-2, 28 KOs) to seize the WBO belt on Saturday night at the Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas.
This fight took place ten months after a controversial ending to their previous encounter.
Torres came out fast and knocked down Holt twice. However when Torres came in for the finish, Holt connected with a huge right hand that knocked Torres out cold. Torres was staggered by an unintentional headbutt just prior to Holt landing the coup de grâce. The bout lasted just 61 seconds. Torres had scored an eleventh round stoppage of Holt in a chaotic atmosphere ten months ago in Barranquilla, Columbia, but Holt returned the favor with interest, leaving Torres hanging motionless from the bottom rope.

The Universum fighters showed an impressive performance in front of a enthusiastic crowd of 5.500 at the GERRY WEBER Stadion in Halle/Westfalen

Felix Sturm und Randy Griffin both started the rematch fight much more aggressive then in their first meeting in October 2007 at the GERRY WEBER STADION in HalleWestfalen. At that time Sturm kept the belt after a spectacular 12 round battle with a draw.More..

Mikkel KesslerThe Week in Words

We start our round up in the midlands with Wayne Elcock (19-3) retaining his British middleweight title after the fight was brought to a halt in the second round because of a deep cut under the eye of Darren Mcdermott (15-1-1). Mcdermott had started the fight brightly and was causing the champion problems with his straight jab, but a nasty clash of heads ended the fight with the ringside doctor telling the referee to stop the fight to the relief of Elcock’s camp and the dismay of McDermott’s camp who thought that they could have stopped the bleeding if given time. Surely a rematch must be the first thing on both fighters mind, as neither was able to show there true potential.More...

Ronald Winky WrightWhere's Winky Wright?

I’ve always regarded Ronald “Winky” Wright as one of the decade’s greatest fighters.  Fans of boxing often criticize the defensive-minded southpaw for his lackluster style of fighting, but I find myself marveling at Wright’s ability to simultaneously pressure and outbox an opponent.

The problem that has plagued Wright’s career was that everyone wanted him to earn his big paydays, but they just didn't’t want to pay to see it.

In fact, Wright’s career has some eerie similarities in comparison with the career of fellow elite southpaw, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker.  More..

The self proclaimed “King” Arthur Abraham (27-0) destroyed a tough and durable Edison Miranda (30-3).  All his trash talking and mind games were left out of the ring when King Arthur stepped in the ring and had Miranda out in just over ten minutes, an easy nights work some might suggest.  Round four ended the mystery surrounding Edison Miranda’s ranking and ability on the world scene.

Yusuf MackYusuf Mack - NABA Boxer of the Month

Yusaf Mack was once considered one of the hottest prospects in the sport, he was being lined up as a potential opponent for Joe Calzaghe. Then Alejandro Berrio ripped his world apart, literally kissing his dream of a world title shot goodbye, when kissing him on the forehead before hurting, stopping and exposing him as a weight drained, badly prepared, Super Middleweight.

Yusaf came back, to beat a limited, Jose Juan Vazquez before taking yet another gamble, against tough world title contender, Librado Andrade.  Once again, despite a good start, his stamina and poor preparation let him down, when his legs gave out in the 7th round with barely a punch landing.

Jermain TaylorJermain Taylor vs Brian Vera ?

"Don't call us, we'll call you...maybe" seems to be the mantra from Team Taylor whenever Ray Leonard and Jeff Wald call to make a fight between the former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and Tournament of Contender's BRIAN VERA

"It's as if we're speaking a foreign language every time we call Lou DiBella  to propose a fight, " said Wald.  "You don't need Rosetta Stone to understand him though.  It's plain as day he's protecting Taylor from his third consecutive loss.  In a year that has seen so many great and competitive matchups, it's a shame Lou and Jermain are so resistant to this fight." Joe CalzagheIts a No Go for Joe

Despite continually putting my support behind Joe Calzaghe and his team of trainers (most notably his father Enzo), I think taking a fight with the reigning middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik may be a step to far and may end up costing Calzaghe the legacy he richly deserves. I don’t think for a second that Joe will ignore this fight; in fact I would be amazed if the fight didn’t take place by the end of this year (most probably in Las Vegas, but Atlantic City shouldn’t be ruled out). I have repeatedly written how much I respect both Father and son and the accomplishment’s they have achieved. More...

David HayeDavid Haye Now Ranked #5

Cruiserweight king David 'The Hayemaker' Haye has been installed at number five in the newly released World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight rankings. The lofty ranking comes as a result of Haye's dominance in winning WBC, WBA and WBO titles as a cruiserweight in addition to his first-round demolition of WBC no.11-ranked heavyweight Thomasz Bonin in April 2007. The WBC champion is currently 'Nigerian Nightmare' Samuel Peter and, given Haye's high rating, the London sensation could be only one win away from competing for and taking Peter's title.More...

Miguel CottoCotto Should be Recognised as the "Interim Lineal" Champion
By Rui Zheng

Shane Mosley, Carlos Quintana, and Zab Judah are among Ring Magazine’s top 6 welterweights in the division right now.  All three individuals hold or have held welterweight titles with Judah and Mosley being lineal champions.  All three are among the best fighters in an incredibly talented welterweight division.  And oh yeah, all three have been defeated by Miguel Cotto.

Flashback to December of 2006.  WBO junior welterweight titleholder Miguel Cotto was set to move up in weight to fight fellow Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana for the vacant WBA welterweight title.  At this time, Cotto was viewed by many including myself as a talented fighter, though his chin and his plodding style were questionable.  I remember watching Cotto go life and death with unheralded Ricardo Torres as well have moments in which he looked confused against the speed of Paul Malignaggi. Its time for me to earn my pay and start letting the world know who I believe is going to set there division alight and along the way become very rich and gain many admirers. In recent years it was Manny Pacquiao beating Marco Antonio Barrera or Joe calzaghe defeating Chris Eubank, both those men took there chance and never looked back. So it ’s with careful consideration that I throw out a few names that in my opinion will have The Boxing world in the palm of their hands by the end of the year.
